X-RAY VISION

After working with ink, a different approach to black and white compositions can be done with some some elements handled transparently. The easiest paper for suggesting transparency is plain tracing paper that can be cut/torn into several overlapping layers to offer more depth. The following example will illustrate.

In this application, we are borrowing the technique of "double cuts" which not only promote multiple forms by cutting and re-cutting the original contour (dotted lines) and using the shapes wholly or partially as an integral part of a collage composition.

Beginning with folded drawing paper, half of the desired symmetrical shape is sketched then cut out in some manner. Both positive (shape) and negative (remainder)aspects are image makers as seen below below.

A few practices with different thicknesses of white strings and cords offer interesting linear texture fills. Be inventive--try combinations and create more of your own!

Here are 4 separate double cut shapes. The large jar and 2 small bottles on the right are constructed with several layers of cut/torn tracing paper.

The two large shapes in the back and right are inner shapes from 1 sketch. The contour is kept from one, and the inside is used to make a white corregated cardboard image behind it. The cardboard depths are painted black with marker. Different thicknesses of white string/cord/thread become line texture overlapping the jars and part of the background as well.

Many interesting white fabrics with widely spaced weaves, (free, outdated sample books) and Japanese printing papers are available that offer different degrees of translucency as well. Limiting the composition to one neutral hue can offer challenges as well as excitement in this kind of composition. Three dimensional white materials like beads and sugar cubes, coarse salt/sand, candy and whatever might be some other options. Go for it!
