5 LAYER COLLAGE: MIXED MEDIA CONSTRUCTION

    Organizing a multiple media collage can be simplied and better planned by using "layers". The specific requirement was to create a composition on a theme of choice having 5 or more shapes. Each shape would be assigned 1-5 mixed media. Each section would be planned, completed and set aside until all areas were finished. The composition was to favor differences in size relationships unrelated to reality and an interesting placement. Some shapes were to overlap others. Each shape's construction was to be noted on the final sketch listing the materials that would compose it. After completing all sections, final arrangement could be reorganized if desired.

    The left sketch outlines a demonstration plan with outlines for the shapes and indications of their materials. Sketches are drawn to size outlined with marker if desired. We are ready to start!

    The background is painted with water colors first, over the marker outlines if they were a chosen option. It is then set aside. Construction of the individual shapes continues until all sections are finished. Click images for larger views.

    Water color was selected as the painting medium because of its transparency over the outlined sketches. NOT outlining offers the opportunity to change one's mind. New re-arrangements can be made before final attachment.
