All designing can be accomplished with circles in a strip form (above example), in this case on 4"X18" railroad board. When completed, circles are cut out and the 3 arcs surrounding the triangles are folded up as shown on the right. |

The top and bottom segments are attached in the same way. The design "bottoms" (arrows) are adjacent to each other and the side by side "arcs" are glued together (left). The center section shows the attachment of the final 2 arcs. On the right is the finished top area. In connecting the middle segments together note the difference in placement. Designs are alternately aligned "bottom" to "top" as shown below left, and then the last two arcs, as before, are glued together. (right) | |

![]() The construction of a "theme" icosohedron offers many skills: measuring, organizing, drawing, painting, collage applications, craftmanship in cutting and gluing and manipulating forms, planning and organizing processes and procedures, and opportunities to change or replace unsatisfactory segments.
A note about the construction. For a true "polygon" (for mathematicians), the triangles can be forward instead of recessed as shown. To do this, bend the "arcs" down instead of up after cutting out the circles, placing all of them hidden inside the construction. The outside surface would then be smooth without protrusions or design extensions. When closing the final 2 arcs, be sure to attach and glue knotted string inside the form in order to suspend the sculpture and be admired in its entirety. However you cut and form it, it's an exciting project which is adaptable to many creative ideas. Do give this a try! |
