CHARCOAL INNOVATIONS 2

Charcoal is a "stand alone" medium, but it also can effectively influence other media values. This was a rather unusual application, a unit planned by a student teacher, and it had exciting results. In these first "essence abstractions", charcoal was used as background, as a hue modifier, shape and value maker and collage applique. Here are some of their ideas on 22" X 28" poster boards.

Charcoal dominates the front foreground, is a wide contour around background shapes and modifies (charcoal is rubbed over) the dried tempera hues.

This example began with a textured charcoal background. Charcoal "appliques" added contrast to the newspaper collages. Black values modified the tempera colors.

"Leaves" in many forms are adjacent to a large, charcoal sketched and collaged leaf. Charcoal shades other leaves and background shapes.
