CHARCOAL FINAL ASSIGNMENT

I found these first level student interpretations very creative and enjoyable. They drew from personal experience and made the common and ordinary very striking. Objects floated, were transparent, had unusual placement and good contrasts. Fantasy concepts were exciting and often surrealistic. Tools effected soft blends well and highlights were nicely emphasized. Finished drawings were 18" X 24". I hope in experimenting with charcoal drawings you too, will find this medium very simple and powerful.

The graded assignment following several charcoal practices, was to present 5 or more shapes, each having 3 to 4 values in a "natural" or "fantasy" concept. Many sketches were made followed by 9" X 12" value and shape practices, until final ideas were determined.
