windowtoart "Drawing": Practice 4 Solutions   72 Points   Practice 3   Para Relief 1   Drawing     Choices

ON OUR OWN

In each of these parabolic studies, from 2D and 3D to here, there were 3 goals to be achieved. The first was to provide a drawing experience in which non/minimal art students could receive assurance that they could draw, that they do have creative insights and that they are very capable of diversity in their own designs.

The second goal was to provide skills of judgment where alignment, spacing, and line control would be developed. Since all these were reinforced with math, rulers, compasses and point "gestimates", plenty of opportunity was offered.

The third goal was to encourage students to go beyond the practices that were provided, become aware of other design possibilities, and create their own solutions to the same spatial areas. This was a challenge for many and I believe each student grew in both understanding and competence.

There are many other ways to involve parabolic design for student interest. Perhaps you might include string design, "walls" for various elevations (as shown in the above links), collage materials, or mixed media. There's lots more to explore. Have a great time doing so!
