LINES CREATE MANY VISUAL FORMS

Pencil drawing utilizes various Linear methods to achieve different tone, pattern and textural results. Sharpness and dullness of point, and light, medium or heavy pressure and paper surfaces impose different color application effects.

Our 2nd practice develops linear techniques that would be employed alone or in combination with others for a variety of expressive needs. The examples below indicate linear progressions on a 9 X 12" paper. How about selecting colors and inventing some of your own?

Varied Pressure. Show a series of 3 parallel lines with 1 color. Show light, medium and heavy pressure for each line.

Patterns From Straight Lines. Set a number of straight lines into a pattern with 1 color and rotate them. Try to create a balanced pattern with a random weave.

Patterns from Curves. Create a repeated pattern with individual or sets of curved lines. Show distance by shortening and lengthening the pattern toward the bottom edge.

Stipple. Apply short, dry dotted strokes varied in space for contrasts.

Directional Lines. Apply short lines in the top half of these shapes and longer lines in the bottom half. Follow the curves or edges to suggest volume and 3D.

Crosshatch. With gray and light and dark pencils, show light to heavy pressures for different color values from the top of the square to the bottom.
