FROM SIMPLICITY TO DETAIL

Art level 2 began with the selection of objects representing 5 surface textures: glass, wood, metal, plants, fur, ceramic, fabric, feathers, scales, etc. and were to plan a large "contour" composition. The drawing would be completed in a firm line in pencil, india ink or marker.

The second stage was to create 3 study areas in which colored pencil would highlight in full color, that section's textures.

The final stage was to invent a suitable texture that would move through the background and foreground shapes. This texture could be a futher development of one within the drawing or be something new. All drawings were completed on 18"X24" formats.

TWO SAMPLES

This shows only stages 1 and 2. The ink contours indicate surfaces containing wood (tree stand, fold-down table, louvered doors,) wallpaper, fabric (raincoat, footstool covering), ceramic (porcelain vase) and floor carpeting. The highlighted areas are simple circles in different sizes, and within them the colored pencil displays the required textures. These colored definitions could be in any form.

When the drawing has been color-textured, transparent paper is placed over it and plans for a new repeated or invented texture is designed here. The size of this area, its movement, color interpretation and contents are determined by the student's reflection of his drawing. Here the texture from the footstool fabric is going to be repeated in ink detail within the sketched lines behind and over some of the objects moving to the edges.
