ADDING INK WASH: RESISTS, SMOOTH BLENDS, AND TEXTUREDMultiple ink wash techniques add variety to a composition and effect those changes in values and placement where they are most needed. Smooth gray washes can be varied with wax resist which protects the high intensity whites of the paper as well as producing a sketchy texture. Inking lower values first and letting them dry allows later application of darker, loose and free flows in selected areas. |

PLAIN AND SIMPLE |
There are 3 steps to success with ink and water: control, control and control. Ink can be laid down with brush or pen as a thin outline or thick area. A clean water-loaded brush just needs to touch the very edge of the line and the ink will swim where ever the water goes. Drawing the wash with the brush into the desired area is the goal. Rinsing the brush and taking clean water, pushing this into the already gray wash will lighten it. Values can also be lightened by blotting with paper toweling. At this point it can be left alone, or continue to add more water to lighten again. |
