windowtoart "Drawing": Pastels Intro 2   Applications     Values 2   Drawing     Choices

We spent time on forming elipses. The yellow + green and blue + yellow intensified the green hues. Black heightened the blue.

Beginning with a white base, 1 hue was added and neutral brown rather than black shaded the object.

Working again with elipses, the vase had complementary colors forming neutral hues, and black shading. The center shape was changed to convex shapes. In addition, students were to add something to the vase-- handles, cover, feet, spout, etc. Results were interesting!

The entire work sheet was planned in this manner. The introduction to pastels had these goals: color blends of tints, shades and complements, wet and dry pastel techniques, drawing and redrawing with added pastels rather than erasers, building color by layering and color vocabulary. It was a great week.

After practice skills (which were not graded), comes application skills, (which were.) Students were required to sketch grouped objects of their own choosing arranged on 4 quarters of 12"X18" manila. The design was to be repeated in each quarter but have 4 required color applications.

This assignment was to review the applications practiced and to provide an opportunity to choose designs of their own choosing. The applications required were:
  • Monocromatic (Dry)
  • White base + 1 Hue (dry)
  • 2 Hues + Black & White (Wet)
  • and Free Choice (Wet)
flashing arrow    Beginning students proceeded on to sketches for large, final compositions. I think you will like some of their interesting ideas. Take a look!
