SUMMARY DESIGN: 24"x36" PASTEL PAINTING

With ungraded practice skills completed, it was time to put best understandings and efforts forward. Requirements were (1)a selection of themes---landscapes, animals, cityscapes, still lifes; (2)shapes must fit the large area provided and shown difference in sizing; (3)3 or more color values in each shape and (4) evaluation to be completed and attached to the back of the painting.

The evaluation asked students to describe their works' most successful aspects, difficulties experienced, solutions applied, and their positive and negative opinions about working with pastels and pastel painting. Here are some of their summary designs.

Grade evaluations stressed complexity of ideas, placement and variety of shape sizes, and application of color values. Perspective would be covered at a later time so drawing accuracy was not a primal grading concern. There were wonderful stories expressed in these pastels-- a very colorful lion, an oversized garden, steaming desert and stormy winter scenes, interesting cats, wavy waters, a flowered sun and festive arrows. I found each of these first summary works to have something delightfully expressed in pastels. I hope you do too.
