windowtoart "Drawing": Surface Study 2   Part 3     Drawing     Choices

Continuing with the second part of the study, interpretation of the surface in other media, the above are indicative of other explorations and renderings. Moving from the left is an opaque white ink/white charcoal drawing on black; transparent rendering with conte crayon on tone paper; ceramic vase in colored pencil over tone paper and below it, a metal object tonally sketched in pencil.

The assignment was to render the chosen surface--metal, glass, ceramic or wood--in 3 various ways. The final step would refer back to the original contour drawings, rearrange/add/change/enlarge them into 22"X28" formats. Three media were to be used in a collaged composition beginning with the examples below.

The joy of this entire developmental process is seeing the diversity of expression each individual presents. It is easily seen how changes in shape structure, rendering and overall design placement and execution has grown from the first contour as can be seen in this example.

Each media exploration presents varied opportunities and the selection for final organization was given great thought.

It was an interesting idea to have fabric flow from the teapot and serve as a background. Taking individual shapes from the black vase and developing them into multiple-media collages behind it was exciting. Leaves from the teapot served as a repetitious source in other areas of the compostion.

Alternatives offer wonderful happenings!
