EXPRESSING VALUES: TONAL DRAWING AND TECHNIQUES

Drawing experience derived from patient practice results in the joy of new invention, interpretation and individual study. Several studies were made in preparation for the drawings below. The 1st group presents "tonal" drawing; 2nd and 3rd rows combine two or all of the practiced drawing techniques, and the 3rd group specializes in just one of them. From this experience, advanced students branched out into Mixed Media drawing, developing their ideas with other media combinations.

A few comments about these images from beginning and 2nd level students. First, single object studies were 12x18 in size and the rest were 18x24. "Ordinary" objects and themes did find their way into compositions; the tonal drawings are very strong in contrast, yet I hope you'll notice the strong variety in those portraying technique combinations; the human body provides unending possibilities for ideas; and one of the above was sketched in 1 hour without previous sketches. Guess which one! (hint: do you like horses?)
