CONTOUR SUMMARY: Surface Rendering (Art 2)

for the Unit: Simplicity To Detail

A or A-

Very exciting display of surface treatments; varied textures with strong differences; texture placements in great relationships to plain contour and unfilled background areas.

B+ B or B-

Very good textures displayed; materials demonstrated very well; most textured spaces of good sizes; background might have had a bit more unusual placements.

C+ or C

Surface presentation good but too small in the large format; too similar repetitions of the same kind; contour very dominating instead of being more implemented with smooth/surfaced textures.

C- or D

Contour drawing needs enlargement for that sized format; surface details too small and limited in areas; some blendings done satisfactorily.

CONTOUR SUMMARY: Movement

A or A-

Placement of forms often presented a very pleasant and surprising effect; composition offers good visual revolutions of shapes; great directional arrangement.

B+ B or B-

Very good placement in general; materials and color sequences in good arrangements; sometimes more background could have been occupied with directional shape elements.

C+ or C

Composition too centered or has too few shapes offering shifts in direction; simple textures could have been used to suggest more movement.

C- or D

Too many contour areas not contrasted with color values or textures; background not involved enough or not at all.

CONTOUR SUMMARY: CONTRASTS

A or A-

Excellent choice of materials and renderings; color contrasts strong with a variety of values and blends; nice carryover of pencil techniques.

B+ B or B-

Nice placement of color in some areas; good renderings with collage materials; background may still have remained too dominant.

C+ or C

More areas needed textural/color contrasts; shapes may be fairly well drawn but appear too empty without more surface detailing.

C- or D

Line contours, texture surfaces barely expressed; work needs more effort and application.

CONTOUR SUMMARY: Balance

A or A-

Nicely avoided the usual central placement of forms; very large shapes well offset by arrangement of smaller ones in close and well spaced proximity;

B+ B or B-

Overall contour placements arranged well; lack of movement/contrast areas may hinder the unusual character the composition could have.

C+ or C

Organization may be too symmetrical, unvaried in size relationships which presents a "tight" composition.

C- or D

More changes needed from preliminary sketches; a better blend of large and smaller shapes; more movement in applied textures.
