REDUCTION BLOCKS: Design for Block Prints (Art 3)

for the Unit: Reduction Block Printing

A or A-

Strong, interesting design planned; subject has fine arts appeal w/personal interpretation; complex shapes; good art principles shown.

B+ B or B-

Appropriate subject for design; well planned spatially; generally good shapes with opportunities for good texture cutting.

C+ or C

Adaquate design; could be more imaginative in form; placement may be static; subject could be more complex in nature.

C- or D

Subject not really unusual in concept or display; size and placement of shapes need more thought.

REDUCTION BLOCKS: Texture Cutting

for the Unit: Shape and Shading

A or A-

Very good texture cuts fitting shape contours; controlled cutting demonstrating shading, movement and diversity for color printing.

B+ B or B-

Generally very good texture cutting; most fit the contours; some cuts may be unnecessarily deep or too shallow for color printing; perhaps more variety/changes needed for the forms designed.

C+ or C

Not enough textured areas to separate the forms; may be too much of the same texture or too much texture which lose the shapes.

C- or D

Shapes too few/small for format size; too much empty background; not enough opportunity within the shapes to demonstrate good texture forming.

REDUCTION BLOCKS: Ink/Color Application

for the Unit: Color Printing

A or A-

Excellent color blending varieties; strong light/dark contrasts; 3 color line-ups very well done.

B+ B or B-

Some color areas vague--not enough ink applied; more experimentation could be done with brayer blending;

C+ or C

Color applications too solid in values--more color variety and mixes needed; some spaces not inked enough; some layers off center.

C- or D

Some effort at color control but edges not in line; applications too light; not all color prints and methods done.

REDUCTION BLOCKS: Quality of Prints

A or A-

Excellent print variety of color experiments; sharp/clear prints; layers matched up very well; color choices enhanced the subject well; all print methods demonstrated.

B+ B or B-

Most prints done very well; colors present the cut layers well; may be too much of the darkest (last) value; all print methods demonstrated.

C+ or C

Most prints done well; some corners not matching; may have too much of the same color; more color diversity needed; not all print methods demonstrated.

C- or D

Print group has several flaws: missed areas, too light ink application; cuts not completed; too few prints; not all print methods demonstrated.

In this experience students were asked to write a paper on these issues: (A)Describe the tools used for block printing and what each does. (B) Describe how texture cuts affect desired shapes and background. (C) Color application is crucial to making good prints. Offer several methods of color printing, aspects that should be avoided and those that should be stressed.
