D. OCCULT BALANCE

Tempera Paint 12"X18"

Watercolors 12"X18"

This particular balance was discovered by chance in a random library search. It's name is peculiar--perhaps because it is "different" from known balance styles.

Occult balance has a strong variety of sizes to show distance, has movement in an angular or curved direction, and most of all, background dominates the composition.

I thought that an interesting concept to experience and so we gave it a try. Formats below are 9"X12".

Variety of sizes is shown in both shapes and materials; movement is an upside-down "V", first towards left and then turns downward to the right lower corner.

Wallpaper, tempera & string.

A simple angular, upward movement, with shapes declining in size from bottom to top edges. Perhaps it could have been moved over to the right a bit more.

White and black tempera on a dark background

Movement here travels outward to the right, but we don't miss a counter balance on the left. Still, here and in all the others, background is very heavy.

Layered watercolor washes and ink.

Our next study in Fundamentals concerns shape relationships called Spatial Tensions. We all do need to control tensions in our lives, right? Check it out!
