Using Interval in a composition where it must fit a fixed format is not the same as cutting a practice shape and having "open" arrangement. In all of the student examples that follow, two very important rules were observed.

First, the design and the format were to be the same size. In these examples, all are 12"X18".

Therefore, the "interval" can't happen by moving the shapes away from each other--they must be created. How? By first cutting the desired form, and then re-cutting it smaller,by following the original contour or cutting the edges differently. See examples.

Tempera Paint, curvilinear design, interval conforms to cut shapes and are mostly equal in size.

Cut white poster board, varied interval widths, exaggerated cuts and some shapes removed.

Shape replacement with metallic & contruction papers, tempera paint, varied intervals.

Construction paper, color replacement, intervals conform to cut shapes.
