PATTERN: RHYTHMIC MOVEMENT IN MANY FORMS |
![]() Some Art Fundamentals are difficult for non-art and beginning art students to comfortably absorb, but "Pattern" isn't one of them. It is so ingrained in our daily life--in packaging, clothes, cover designs that we're at home with it without giving it much analysis. So the purpose of this unit is to do just that: understand some basic constuction methods, learn variance, experience the good old fashioned method of hand repetitive design and implement other fundamentals like color, texture, size relationships, etc, in the whole composition. There are so many ways to design PATTERN and without getting too complicated about it, a few visual methods would be presented--like the one above.(Others will follow). A most traditional pattern of 2 alternating blocks, it is a simple arrangement for the inexperienced--and open to interpretation as well. Let's see some results below. |

Students are always encouraged to be inventive. In this case, "think angular" was pushed. Studying individual blocks, it is apparent that angular design was considered in one of the blocks in all the plans above. One of the arrangements went a step further, and staggered the two blocks in alternate lines. Can you spot which one? |
The formats are 18"X24" with 1" side and 2" top/bottom borders, permitting 4"X5" blocks. All designs are tempera painted. And--the staggered design is the last one. |
