windowtoart "Fundamentals":Spatial Tensions 2     Part 1  Balance Foundations Choices

Tempera, colored paper, cord, yarn.

Many fundamentals shown here: interval, line design, positive/negative shapes, contrast, texture, approximate symmetry with a sidewise "v" movement.

Foil, tempera, cord, colored paper wallpaper

Here the background with yellow sponged texture augments the very delicate cutting of shapes. Solid ones nicely constrast the piercing foil and string contours.

Enamel, foil and colored papers, yarn, marker

Primary and complement colors offer strong contrasts. Yarn and black lines open up the solid shapes.

Colored paper and ink.

Large curved shapes dominate the composition in a circular movement. Solutions can be simple and effective at the same time.

The integration of all spatial tensions was easily accomplished. As was noted in some of the designs, other principles and elements like contrasts, balance, line and texture were effected--as though they too were intentionally planned.

With the practices completed, the fundamentals were then applied to a large summary painting, where evaluations were based upon the principles and elements selected, color study and the various painting techniques employed. Please see the series beginning with Tools.
