AN "UNPLANNED PATTERN": ALWAYS A SURPRISE

Here's a method of constructing a unique pattern design where the composition isn't obvious until it is half finished. That's because it's continually being "built upon" one section at a time.

This is really quite an enjoyable project because the design keeps changing. When half finished, those completed repeats are simply duplicated at the bottom of the format. Let's take a look!

It is said that "a picture is worth a thousand words." In this case, "amen" to that! The below animation will help clarify this method.

NOTE: The red line helps show how the triangle is turned.

The Process
  • Use a square of any size depending upon finished design. The demo (remember, it's only "half-done") uses 4" squares. The square is cut diagonally in half.
  • The rules were to use 3-7 lines connecting 2 sides and attached to at least one side of the triangle. One shape had to be included.
  • Plan many sketches for consideration.
  • Selected sketch is drawn on a tracing paper triangle, the diagonal of the square.
  • Begin the design in the upper left corner of the format.
  • Keep turning that triangle so it always "mirrors" the sketch before it.
  • At the half-way point, the design pattern is more clear, and the top half is duplicated for completion.
  • Straighten up the connections and the plan is ready for color, texture, and other contrasts of excitement.
