BENCHMARKS: Line, mass, shape constructed from visual and graphic cognitive integration; line as form maker and contrast control; shape correction and definition without erasing.
MATERIALS
A. Introductory classes: Pencils, ball point pens, markers, crayons; .
B. Advanced classes: 4and 6B drawing pencils; pens and india ink; colored pencils; pastels; watercolors and brushes; assorted tissue/collage papers;12x18 newsprint,
C. All classes:12X18 newsprint,computer paper,81/2X11 typing paper;12x18 60lb drawing paper; watercolor paper: sufficient glass, metal, fabric, clothing and sport articles and ordinary objects for each class.
PROCEDURES
- Introductory classes need at least a 15 minute demonstration to show correct drawing movements, varying the amounts of pencil pressures, drawing in "layer"s and very fast timed sketches.
- Begin with each student having one object in front of him. Do timed pencil sketches of 3-10 second periods for each layer. Repeat 3 times making sketches close to each other and randomly on the paper. Students pass their objects to the right and begin with a new one. Continue 30 second practices for about 10-20 minutes. Change objects after 3 practices.
- After single studies, use 2 objects with overlapping. Fold newsprint into quarters. Encourage larger sketches. Continue with 2-40 second practices, and exchange objects as needed.
- For the 3rd space, put 3 objects together and extend time to 1 minute. Students can make arrangements for small groups to use. Stress differences in sizes and layering contrasts.
- For the 4th space, rearrange objects and reduce time to 40 seconds.
- In succeeding days, include ball point pens by combining pencil 1st and 2nd layers with ball point pen 3rd layer; use 1 ball point and stress changing pressure for each layer--a bit more difficult; use 3 different colored pens or combine with colored pencils for early layers.
- Expand experiences with magazine photographs of various topics, 1 minute studies. Use single and combined media for half the period. Using 9x12 paper, students should plan a simple composition of 3 objects, varying sizes and in whatever media they like. Students keep all practice sketches.
- Assignment day: students choose objects for individual studies for half the period using quartered newsprint for grading practice. The other half is for timed drawings to be handed in for credit. They should complete 1- 12x18 page(folded into quarters)of (a)single object in pencil-30 seconds) (b)2 objects in pencil-30 seconds (c) 3 objects in pencil in ball point pen 1-minute (4)the same 3 objects in 2 media--1 minute. On the back side, they are to create 2 final drawings of their own choice, for 2 minute studies each. This page is handed in.
EVALUATION
Look for contrast differences, placement and relative sizes of objects to each other, validity of technique (should not be contour outlines), strength of "layers", and complexity of work attempted.
ADVANCED CLASSES
- Review the techniques previously experienced in pencil, crayon and ball point pen. Students prepare 6-9x12 practice review papers creating their own object arrangements. Working from these, expand to crayon and pastel media; pen and ink modelled style drawings, watercolor and brush and ink and watercolor and layered color pencil.
- Demonstrate crayon and pastel layering with 1 large object, students working with you. Discuss and compare color intensity, textural appearance, mass and line, and shape correction.
- 3rd and 4th yr students need to strive for portfolio technique and drawing competence. Encourage independent study and require 4 good examples: 9x12 pencil gesture, 12x18 colored pastel gesture, 18x24 still life, landscape or figure study in 2 media of choice, and an 18x24 ink, watercolor and collage mixed media.
