GRAPHIC INTRODUCTION 3: BLOCKS and MIXED MEDIAVery simple art materials can effect excellent graphics by combining art media. This particular unit involves 3 different areas of design continuing the work with different media. |
| Part 1: SYMMETRICAL DESIGN Part 2: CRAYON PRINTING

Part 1, left, began with 6x9 newsprint using paper as a printing block. The topic was facial drawing, greatly simplified by using "doublecut" techniques as demonstrated in the previous sequences, Intro 1 and Intro 2. These designs were to include the principle of "interval"--- spaces between shapes. The design was to be organized with separating cuts dividing the face into several parts. When the cutting results were satisfactory, the design was duplicated in construction paper, cutting 2 different colors at one time. For final completion, some of the individual pieces were to be replaced with an option of other colors, materials or visual textures. Part 2, right, was to re-interpret that construction as a print, using the same color capablities as presented in the previous Introductory Graphic pages. The image to the right is a simple multicolor print, one of many color sequences made. Do you see color placement differences between this print and the previous ones which utilized "levels"? |
Part 3: Mixed Media | |
The last part of the unit was to change one of the printed forms of the design to a Mixed Media using WATERCOLORS or thinned BLACK TEMPERA as an option. With watercolor, India Ink could be added in a wet or dry background state for dark textural impact. In the right image watercolors were used over the print as a wax resist. Facial lines were emphasized with ink when the print was dry, and wet areas were touched with ink to run and flow in particular spaces. The "beaded texture", typical of wax resists, changes the total effect of the design once again. |
