One of the most interesting things about this woodcut, is its size. It was designed on a 24" X 36" wood piece---quite a size to manage on a table or on one's lap.
The "white" color areas were defined by continual cutting away and enlargening those begun on the first block. The resultant texture of this 2 block cutting is quite nice.
The artist who disigned it was at the time, a master's degree candidate. He had extraordinary drawing skills, and these were very apparent in lithography and obvious here. He could sit down with a small 8" X 12" lithostone, and draw the most interesting composition of figures in a matter of minutes. The print here is called "Judith & Holephernes". I was delighted to have traded a print for one of his any time. |
