ABSTRACTION: INNOVATIONS, INSPIRATION AND INGENUITY

When the majority of students have little or no art experience, the introduction of how to "abstract" images is a real challenge. This was also true for those who considered only Realism to be "art" and who were solely trained in that discipline.

So, with Realism as the starting point, our goal was twofold: to understand that like poetry, there are many "styles" of art; and to learn that by modification, an idea can be transformed into newness, and when desired still retain some of the original semblance. Complete purity of abstract forms would come much later.

Beginning With Reality

After completing many sketches on various themes, one was selected to develop into three distinct styles of art by "modification with abstraction". The example below as well as the one above shows the three styles in different media.

1st Sequence: A contrast drawing with 2 techniques with black or sepia pencil.

2nd Sequence: Shape modification with bright colored pencil.

3rd Sequence: New compostion with Changeover Lines for simple color change.

Here's how we began. Abstract principles would come slowly and easily. Beginning with the "known" made alteration easier to digest and meaningful. Surprisingly, although contrast drawing was a familiar aspect, the 2 succeeding ones were very exciting. Hooray for new beginnings!
