MANY WAYS TO SAY "TREE"

To facilitate the concept of styles, modification and abstraction, large posters with simple strategies suggested a few techniques in which a naturalistic drawing could be transformed.

Some Design Methods To Implement

A. Curved line, transparent/opaque overlapping, accent line (thick and thin); design asymmetry.

B. Reducing to geometric form; uneven shape divisions; changeovers;

C. Angular line, transparent overlapping; interval spacing;

D. Simplification with single line construction; transparent overlapping.

E. Contrasting line forms; open and closed solid area; changeovers;

F. Contour extensions to sides; single line design; transparent overlapping; curved-angular design.

The tree composition was a study in which 1 shape was to be displayed in a variety of styles, sizes, simple color and varied media, showing methods of linear and shape abstraction. Black/colored ink, markers, tempera paint, colored pencil and watercolors were used.

6 "changeover lines" were required in some manner for the 3rd abstracted display. They could be place in any manner, although most selected vertical directions. Wherever the form contour was intersected, that area was to differ from its neighbor by addition of texture or color change.

Four color values were to be implemented and the diagram demonstrated how the many now-independent shapes could have painted/textured contrasts.

As a helpful reminder, students were given this 4"X6" reference to build on.
