STENCIL COLLAGE:EXCITEMENT WITH THE UNEXPECTED

  A very favorite collage composition of mine is this one. We begin with a simple object or shape(free forms are unique), draw and cut out its outline, reduce that image again and intercut that reduced image once more---3 forms. Those shapes as well as the negative scraps become the contour and shape makers which are drawn in part, whole or split-up in an overlapping organization around the format and may be used in any direction. The right example shows two simple jar forms cut in this manner.

  Most of the shapes in the collage are easily discernible, remembering that only part of the shape may have been used. The final arrangement was on 12"x18" white drawing paper. Each of the divided shapes are then planned for color, material and texture (bottom right). Then, all the collage work is ready to begin. In this example there are metallic wallpapers, colored strings, pen and ink textures, construction paper and ink areas and tonal and textured pencil drawing. The very same stencils could be used again and again with different materials and of course, new interpretations. Gather up some goody materials and go for it!
