An artist is not paid for his labor but for his vision...James McNeil Whistler

For this collage, a color limitation was set--all components had to be white. An 18"X24" format was primed with 2 heavy coats of gesso with a palette knife. A linear compostion was planned and materials gathered-- 1/2" nylon cord, white felt and corregated cardboard. The line design and circular links were sketched on white poster board, cut out and assembled with additional gesso.

Designing with limitations can challenge the imagination and effect very satisfactory results.

How about trying a mixed media collage with only black as the uniting element?

The very concept of collages can stir up unending images in approaches, materials, content and construction. They can be on a flat surface, project outward in any direction, have both open and closed areas, and be as 3-dimensional as one likes.

The important thing sometimes might be NOT to have preconceived ideas of results so that experimentations can achieve new and unexpected visual perspectives. Begin with a small format, if you feel inexperienced, and grow from there!
