ADVANCED ABSTRACTION: TEMPERA PAINTING

As art exerience increases, students are able to homogenize the many styles, techniques, procedures and processes they have learned, and to select certain methods of design for individual purposes.

Third level students were asked to study a variety of painting styles, and to use some shape alterations that would suggest abstraction in any degree. All or part of the work could be modified by technique, or the entire composition could be one in which shapes may or may not relate to each other.

Having experienced painting practices they were free to emphasize a particular style of painting or blend and texture as they desired.

Although some of the common characteristics of abstraction such as color changeovers and line variation are seen, this painting carries the idea of unrelated shapes, opaque and transparent rendering into an organization which forces viewers to conceive an interpretation of their own. What kind of story do you see here?

In this room the carpeting and its texture form the background in vertical and horizontal movements. It is more geometric in form design relying mostly on angular lines and has shape extensions to the sides. It nicely and simply abstracts the natural forms by distortion and exaggeration. The painting does not disquise its intent.

Influenced by pointillistic painting, this work combines true color mixtures as well as personal blends to portray that painted style. The concept of a puzzle background was continued into the turtle shell body design, but is contrasted with a smooth color rendering.

A combination of broad stroke and pointillist rendering appear in this painting. In the vein of Pop Art, the ice cream delicacy is supersized, greatly dominating the surface. Scoops become geometrically angled in contrast to the grapes below. Color blending and directional painting characterize the work.
