windowtoart: "PAINTING": Pointillism Oils Tempera Abstracts Painting Choices
POINTILLISM REVISITEDThis painting section and the one that follows displays advanced students' independent study of selected art styles. Here, a general introduction with visual aids introduces several painting techniques such as Cubism, Non-Objective Art, the Fauves, Expressionism, Pop and Op Art, etc. Students researched a selected style and began sketching a large composition in its techniques. Other finished work in this area in tempera can be can be seen here or in the links above. The most popular was this one, where fascination with pointillist dots to effect hues and values were often executed in large formats. Many were around 22"X30". I praise the eyesight that accomplished the focusing needed and the patience that went with it! |

The top left example is a very finely painted composition with watercolor and ink. Miniscule dots blend background and foreground in mildly abstracted "in and out" areas. The middle one is a lovely Spanish garden lush with greens that surround a single figure in bright, contrasting hues. A small arch deepens the perspective view. The bottom left image arranges ordinary vegetables in an unordinary way. As typical with pointillism in watercolor, the dots are traditionally structured with primary hues next to each other to optically mix. However, it is usual for wet watercolor when overlapping others to make blends of their own. So be it! |
