NEUTRALS--THE "SALT" OF PAINTING

  Tints and Shades add much to hue diversity. Two other ways to alter color intensity, is by the addition of "Grays", varying mixtures of white + black, and by hues blending with their own complements. We'll take a look at both methods.

8 Different GRAY Values

Greens, oranges, browns and blues are blended with 4 different values of GRAYS. Modifications are less with the lighter values than would be with pure black.

In these examples blue, orange, green, brown, yellow and purple are modified by variations of gray blends. How about that purple cat?

Now, let's look at 3 examples of a "LIMITED PALETTE", where a specific color system is used. Here different Complementary Colors also contain tints, shades and gray values.

Top Row: Yellow + Purple, Red + Green, Orange + Blue. All the rest are Orange + Blue with and without Grays. All images are smooth brush blends with the bottom one adding dry brush.
