COMPARISONS ENFORCE TONAL DISCERNMENT
![]() ![]() | Constrasting the same painting from color to black washes, or from warm to cool tones (or vice versa) teaches 3 things: (1) the different effects value diversities present,(2) the power of one neutral color to state images strongly and with simplicity and (3) the importance of tonal subtleties as well as strengths. |
Above are two sketches which students were free to change and improve, especially the tree which was deliberately "limb chopped". Comparison paintings were to be made for one of them in either color to black, or warm to cool contrasts. Formats for both would be 12"X18" and the black wash was to be completed first. Because I believe that classwork is a great indication of progress, opportunity is offered in class time for exam content. These comparison paintings are Part 1 of a quarter exam.

You should have noticed that the last 5 pages were all "follow me" experiences. The intent is not to show approval for "copying", but to help newbies build good habits of planning and control by following step-by-step procedures that were demonstrated on each and every day. At all times, students were free to make additions and color changes as we moved along. And yes, we will "do our own thing" in the summary applications that follow. |
