wax resist leaves, ink and watercolors

It was a pleasure to see that the humble crayon was no longer regarded as a low or child-like tool for art purposes. For those who never witnessed the "resistance" of wax colors and watercolors before, the masking effects as well as the textural ones became useful.

One aspect I especially appreciate with wax resist is that enables the "sparkling quality" of white spaces to occur in ordinary drawing paper which we could afford instead of watercolor paper which we could not--at least at this level and number of students. Also, dark hues surrounding the wax pitted areas are often deeper in tone and add interesting depth where it is applied. Do you agree?

mountains, trees in neutralized hues.pointillistic water scene

Both paintings utilize neutral hues in their shapes. The left one is on manila paper which deepens the contrast. The right one was a dedication to the pointillism explored in previous practices.

These two really demonstrate the importance of size relationships and placement in design--which this level had not yet explored. The left figure nicely dominates the format space while the right one needed to do more with less. Live and learn!

After many skill drills, a challenge to put them together was offered for extra credit. How about trying out the Challenge too?
