WHITE: SOFT AND SERENE

    White backgrounds to me, are the most neutral warps. They seem to dominate or change the overall paintings to a lesser degree--if that is a desired outcome. White seems to benefit the lighter tones of the composition increasing their visibility and blends into the total design more quietly. It would be an interesting comparison to make duplicate paintings and vary weft insertions into white, black or another colored background.

This 2 week unit provided basic experiences for Introductory to Art level students. Generally, most students were unfamiliar with measuring, water color painting, and weaving. Work began with sketches and proceeded to size enlargment, transfering on a light table, application of washes, weft preparation, cutting and final weaving. It was one of my favorite painting units. Try a large size sometime--18" X 24", and a comparision study too!
