The use of "limited palette" here made this drawing very attractive. It was a very beautiful "first" grid.

GRIDS CAN VARY

For extra credit or in 1st level classes, larger grids are offered (Left). The 12"X18" size is enlarged from a 1"X6" plan and all media are open.

Afterwards, we also go 1 step further. Students were challenged to select a small area, block, or combination, and create a painting with those shapes, modifying them if desired.

The center images show 2 selected areas. The right one (from the previous page)is modified on the top right in watercolors and painted paper collage. The left one (from the main image) is modified on the bottom right with watercolors, painted fabric and colored pencil.

Design could be rendered in any art style or painting techique, collage materials included. Watercolors, tempera, fabrics, printed papers, colored tissue and wallpapers were favorites. Sometimes 3D materials were painted to keep the texture but change the color.
