WHY REDESIGN LETTERS? | |
![]() |
Why not? Must we give obeyance only to those who do? The demand for unique representation is endless, and font design is a crucial element in achieving unique identity. It has its challenges to be readable as well as unusual, and exciting without being too far out. We began with HOW a letter can have its form changed, and went on from there. |
The posters above and below displayed possibilities with the letters "A" and "C" in many forms and materials. Students were limited to 2 materials for their letter collages. |

WE BEGIN WITH SKETCHES: LOTS OF THEM | |

Students were asked experiment with free forming letter designs, and then select 2 or 3 for for final development. They were to consider shape configuring with contours, textures, color, division, curves, angles, combinations and whatever helped build an interesting letter form. Above all, the redesign should be "readable", remembering it was an element of communication. The sketches showed some very nice ideas in diffent constructions, styles, simple backgrounds and even a sense of humor. A computer paper was folded into thirds lengthwise, and into halves widthwise twice giving 24 sketch areas for thinking. A few beginnings are displayed at the left. Many sheets were used! |
