Part 3: PUTTING IT TOGETHER

The cut image is opened and placed on a 12x18 final background, paper clipping both together. Lightly, trace around the inside edges of all "open" shapes. These are the areas to be colorfully textured. However, before doing so, it is wise to TRACE AGAIN 1/8" OUTSIDE the originally traced line as seen in sketch 2, dotted line. This sets the outline BACK slightly, so it will not show past the cut shape. Outside edges may also be traced, but do not need a 2nd interior line. These areas can have additional closing lines added to them or simply run out the side edges creating larger backgound spaces for texturing.

After line tracing is completed, the original tracing lines are erased and each area is then applied the desired texture. Sides may contain identical fills, same shape but different colors or not be matched at all. Matched fills was the usual.

The final step is to attach the shapes together. Keeping the papers clipped together at the middle and bottom edges, glue can be applied to the top word shapes FROM THE MIDDLE and then pressed down, gluing about 2" heights at a time. When finished at the top, continue the gluing procedure from the middle down.

Essentially, Word Filigree is a simple, continous, line design, enhanced with color and texture. Each of the examples below were personal names or countries. Tilt your head sideways to decipher. How about trying one of your own? Sports, seasonal holiday's, child's name, or family occasion can suggest filigree words to design for yourself or someone else.
