LETTERS WHICH DEFINE: Part 3

  The left image is a continuation of the aspect in which words are used to "define" an idea. Although more imaging could have been included, this 2nd level student seemed to have concentrated on a variety of letter styles and manipulated them to express her intended idea. Legend, Roman, Poster and open-poster styles were used with both brush and pen lettering were applied to a sponge painted background.

  Here Chancery, Script, and Poster styles define fruits and vegetables for a Polish student's first lettering experience. Stippling over a tempera base with added collage papers were her basic construction. Also, not clearly detected in the photo was her continuous repetition of words within each shape. Although spacing could have been more generous, this work reached into the 2nd aspect of word application that advanced students followed in their formations.
